Scarlett DePaul: LIHSA Scholar-Artist & Dance Star in the Making
At Long Island High School for the Arts, we’re always in awe of the passion and drive our students bring to their craft. Scarlett DePaul, a dance student from Northport High School, is no exception. Recently named a Scholar-Artist for Dance, Scarlett has truly earned this honor, and we’re thrilled to share her journey with you!
For Scarlett, being named a Scholar-Artist is a milestone. “It feels like all the time and effort I’ve put into dance is finally being recognized,” she says. “It’s such an honor, and I’m really grateful for all the opportunities at LIHSA that have helped me grow both as a dancer and as a person.”
After receiving the award, she credits her time and teachers at LIHSA as part of her success. “I’ve had the chance to work with some amazing choreographers and dancers through guest residencies, and performing in shows like the 50th Anniversary Big Shot Performance was incredible,” Scarlett shares. “Each performance has pushed me to be better and has really helped me grow—not just in technique, but in confidence.”
Ms. L’aura Bagdziunas and Ms. Natalie L’Etoile, were named as teachers who helped her reach new heights. “They’re both such huge inspirations,” she says. “Not only are they talented dancers, but they genuinely care about their students’ success. Ms. L’aura, especially, has been such a personal mentor to me. She’s been there to guide me, even when I wasn’t sure of myself.”
Scarlett is also passionate about changing how people view dance and dance programs. “I want dance to be recognized not only as an art form but as a sport, too. We put in so much physical work, and I think it’s time that dancers get the respect they deserve for that,” she explains. “I also hope to advocate for young dancers to have access to amazing programs like LIHSA, where they can really grow and find their voice.”
After graduation, Scarlett has big plans for her future, including pursuing a BFA in dance with a potential minor in exercise science. “I want to continue my dance training, but I also hope to help other dancers prevent injuries and recover in a healthy way,” she explains. In 10 years, Scarlett envisions herself performing professionally, either with a dance company or doing commercial work. “I’d love to perform on cruise ships or as a backup dancer,” she says. But her passion goes beyond performing—she wants to give back to the dance community. “After spending time performing, I’d like to help other dancers recover from injuries—both physical and emotional—through kinesiology.” Having scoliosis herself, Scarlett understands the challenges of dealing with physical setbacks and wants to help others overcome them. Through her involvement in LIHSA’s Dance Buddies Program, she’s already taking steps to give back by sharing her passion for dance with others.
And Scarlett’s time at LIHSA has taught her so much more than just dance. “I’ve learned how to work well with others, how to stay organized, and the importance of networking in the industry,” Scarlett says. “LIHSA has shown me that dance isn’t just about individual success—it’s about community and collaboration. That’s something I’ll carry with me throughout my career.”
The Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist Award is a prestigious and highly competitive honor that recognizes students for both their academic excellence and artistic talent. Scarlett’s achievement is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and exceptional abilities. We’re beyond excited to see where her journey takes her next!
