Scarlett DePaul: LIHSA Scholar-Artist & Dance Star in the Making
At Long Island High School for the Arts, weâre always in awe of the passion and drive our students bring to their craft. Scarlett DePaul, a dance student from Northport High School, is no exception. Recently named a Scholar-Artist for Dance, Scarlett has truly earned this honor, and weâre thrilled to share her journey with you!
For Scarlett, being named a Scholar-Artist is a milestone. âIt feels like all the time and effort Iâve put into dance is finally being recognized,â she says. âItâs such an honor, and Iâm really grateful for all the opportunities at LIHSA that have helped me grow both as a dancer and as a person.â
After receiving the award, she credits her time and teachers at LIHSA as part of her success. Â âIâve had the chance to work with some amazing choreographers and dancers through guest residencies, and performing in shows like the 50th Anniversary Big Shot Performance was incredible,â Scarlett shares. âEach performance has pushed me to be better and has really helped me growânot just in technique, but in confidence.â
Ms. Lâaura Bagdziunas and Ms. Natalie LâEtoile, were named as teachers who helped her reach new heights. âTheyâre both such huge inspirations,â she says. âNot only are they talented dancers, but they genuinely care about their studentsâ success. Ms. Lâaura, especially, has been such a personal mentor to me. Sheâs been there to guide me, even when I wasnât sure of myself.â
Scarlett is also passionate about changing how people view dance and dance programs. âI want dance to be recognized not only as an art form but as a sport, too. We put in so much physical work, and I think itâs time that dancers get the respect they deserve for that,â she explains. âI also hope to advocate for young dancers to have access to amazing programs like LIHSA, where they can really grow and find their voice.â
After graduation, Scarlett has big plans for her future, including pursuing a BFA in dance with a potential minor in exercise science. “I want to continue my dance training, but I also hope to help other dancers prevent injuries and recover in a healthy way,” she explains. In 10 years, Scarlett envisions herself performing professionally, either with a dance company or doing commercial work. “Iâd love to perform on cruise ships or as a backup dancer,” she says. But her passion goes beyond performingâshe wants to give back to the dance community. âAfter spending time performing, Iâd like to help other dancers recover from injuriesâboth physical and emotionalâthrough kinesiology.â Having scoliosis herself, Scarlett understands the challenges of dealing with physical setbacks and wants to help others overcome them. Through her involvement in LIHSA’s Dance Buddies Program, sheâs already taking steps to give back by sharing her passion for dance with others.
And Scarlettâs time at LIHSA has taught her so much more than just dance. âIâve learned how to work well with others, how to stay organized, and the importance of networking in the industry,â Scarlett says. âLIHSA has shown me that dance isnât just about individual successâitâs about community and collaboration. Thatâs something Iâll carry with me throughout my career.â
The Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar-Artist Award is a prestigious and highly competitive honor that recognizes students for both their academic excellence and artistic talent. Scarlettâs achievement is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and exceptional abilities. Weâre beyond excited to see where her journey takes her next!
