Audition/Video Portfolio

Acceptance to the Long Island High School for the Arts is based on a competitive portfolio and review of student records to ensure success in both the demanding studio work and the challenging academic programs. Students who are Nassau and Suffolk County residents in grades 8-11 are eligible to submit portfolios and apply. 

Students should inform their guidance counselor of their decision to apply to the Long Island High School for the Arts, so the appropriate district procedure is followed to file an application.

Audition Requirements

Performing Arts Theatre

THEATRE: Prepare and submit separate uploads of two contrasting monologues  

You must use YOUTUBE to upload your video. It should be an UNLISTED link and not marked private. No other video applications or formats will be accepted. 

At the beginning of each video, before performing, briefly introduce yourself by providing the following information. 

  • Your full name 
  • Your school district 
  • Why you chose your monologues or songs (30 seconds or less) 
  • Why do you want to study acting / musical theatre? (30 seconds or less) 
  • For MONOLOGUES: State the name of the character portrayed and the full title of the play and playwright.  

Monologue: 

Memorize, perform, and upload two contrasting, one-minute monologues from a published play. Examples of this may be dramatic/comedic, classical/contemporary,  or two contrasting characters that have very different personalities. Musical Theatre applicants will memorize, perform, and upload one monologue. Choose relatable characters within your natural age range and decide to whom your characters are talking and why. You may choose to play roles of any gender. You may select your own monologues to perform but are welcome to review and choose a monologue(s) from this  sample monologues library. For support with creating your video, you may view  these helpful tips.  

Performing Arts Musical Theatre

MUSICAL THEATRE: Prepare and submit separate uploads of one song and one monologue. 

You must use YOUTUBE to upload your video. It should be an UNLISTED link and not marked private. No other video applications or formats will be accepted. 

At the beginning of each video, before performing, briefly introduce yourself by providing the following information. 

  • Your full name 
  • Your school district 
  • Why you chose your monologues or songs (30 seconds or less) 
  • Why do you want to study acting / musical theatre? (30 seconds or less) 
  • For MONOLOGUES: State the name of the character portrayed and the full title of the play and playwright.  
  • FOR SONGS: State the title of the song, the name of the character, full title of the musical, composer and lyricist. 

Monologue:

Musical Theater Song Video:  

Perform and upload 16 bars (or approximately one [1] minute) of a memorized song from a musical.  Songs can be performed with live or recorded accompaniment; accompaniment recordings should have no back-up vocals.  Choose a song performed by a relatable character and decide to whom your character is singing and why. You may select your own musical theater song to perform but are welcome to review and select from this  sample musical theater song library. 

 

This audition video will be used to assess the following components: musicality, rhythm, pitch, tone, intonation, vocal range, technique, and expression.

Performing Arts Instrumental Music

You must use YOUTUBE to upload your video. It should be an UNLISTED link and not marked private. No other video applications or formats will be accepted. 

At the beginning of each video, before performing, briefly introduce yourself by providing the following information. 

  • Your full name; 
  • Your school district; 
  • Title of the piece you will be playing; 
  • Why did you choose this piece? How does this piece speak to you as a musician? (30 seconds or less). 

Video 1 

Perform ONE prepared solo selection without accompaniment. Playing without accompaniment means playing by yourself without a track or additional instruments. 

  • Select a piece you feel confident performing that shows your skill level and musicality. 
  • Your face, hands, and whole instrument should be clearly visible, including the full keyboard for pianists. 

This audition video will be used to assess the following components: musicality, rhythm, technique, expression, and for certain instruments pitch, tone, and intonation. 

Video 2 

Perform ONE scale of your choice at a tempo (speed) you find comfortable. For Video #2, drummers (i.e., candidates who play non-pitched percussion instruments) submit a video of TWO rudiments, rather than scales.  

  • This is another opportunity for reviewers to learn more about how:  
  • low and how high you can play; 
  • comfortably and quickly you can move from note to note; 
  • clean and precise your playing is; 
  • well you are able to play in tune; 
  • well you know what notes make up your selected scale; 
  • playing the correct notes is most important; 

Performing Arts Vocal Music

You must use YOUTUBE to upload your video. It should be an UNLISTED link and not marked private. No other video applications or formats will be accepted. 

At the beginning of each video, before performing, briefly introduce yourself by providing the following information. Prepare a video recording that includes ALL parts listed below. Students of all abilities and experience levels are encouraged to apply.  

Before singing, briefly introduce yourself.  Please provide the following information: 

  • Your full name; 
  • Your school district; 
  • Title of the song you will be singing; 
  • Why did you choose this song? How does this song speak to you as a musician? (30 seconds or less) 

Video 1 

Perform and upload 16 bars (or approximately one [1] minute) of a memorized song from any genre.  Songs should be performed with live or recorded accompaniment; accompaniment recordings should have no back-up vocals. Select a song you feel confident performing that shows your skill level and musicality.  

This audition video will be used to assess the following components: musicality, rhythm, pitch, tone, intonation, vocal range, technique, and expression. 

Video 2

Perform ONE scale of your choice using Solfege at a tempo (speed) you find comfortable.   Be sure to tell us the key in which you are singing at the start of your video.

·         This is another opportunity for reviewers to learn more about:

·         Your musicality

·         Your accuracy and clarity as you move from note to note;

·         How well you are able to sing in tune;

·         How well you know what notes make up your selected scale;

Performing Arts Dance

You must use YOUTUBE to upload your video. It should be an UNLISTED link and not marked private. No other video applications or formats will be accepted.

 

Instructions 

Prepare and submit one (1) recorded audition video, including all three parts as described below (Video 1 & Video 2). For support with creating your video, you may view these helpful tips.  

 

Video 1: 

Prepare and record a video of yourself performing the barre sequence below.  

Barre Sequence: 

Record your entire body and make sure the camera is recording from the side position. Be aware of your posture and use appropriate port de bras.  

  • Demi Plies and Grand Plies in 4 positions (1st position, 2nd position, 4th position, 5th position) 
  • Tendu en croix (from 5th position) 
  • Degage en croix (from 5th position) 
  • Battements en croix (from 5th position) 
  • Repeat above on 2nd side  

Video 2: 

Before dancing, briefly introduce yourself.  Please provide the following information: 

  • Your full name; 
  • Your school district; 
  • The style of dance 
  • Why did you choose this piece? How does this piece speak to you as a dancer? (30 seconds or less) OR Why do you want to study dance? (30 seconds or less) 

Prepare and record a video of yourself that shares your passion for dance by performing a one-minute solo of Ballet, Jazz, or Modern. This dance video will be used to assess the following dance components: creativity, musicality, coordination, flexibility, technique, and expression. Record so that your full body and movement is shown.  

You should consider including the following:  

  • different levels (low, medium, and high) 
  • different speeds of movement (slow and fast) 
  • a jump 
  • a turn 
  • a balance 
  • an extension 

For Visual Media Arts & Digital Arts

Applicants interested in this pathway can choose to submit samples of their work in either Visual Media Arts, Digital Art (or a combination of both).

Option #1: Visual Media Arts
Please upload your visual/fine art pieces. You may submit up to 10 pieces. Which may include:

  • Photographs of three-dimensional works of art (e.g. sculptures)
  • Paintings and/or drawings
  • Original architectural drawings of student-designed structures

Option #2: Digital Art
Please upload your digital art pieces. You may submit up to 10 pieces. Which may include:

  • Artistic photographs
  • Electronic works, such as animations, digital “drawings” or “paintings”
  • A link to a website you designed
  • An original logo created in photoshop
