Celebrating Excellence in Visual Arts: Janice Lee
One of LIHSA’s standout student artists, Janice Lee, has recently earned the honor of being named a Long Island Arts Alliance Scholar Artist for the class of 2025 for her work in Visual Arts. This prestigious award is a recognition among students from across Long Island for their academic and artistic success during their high school careers.
Janice, a second-year senior from Syosset High School, shared, “I feel very honored and appreciated to be named a Visual Arts Scholar-Artist this school year. Receiving this award feels like an honorable acknowledgment and validation for the dedication and efforts I have put into both academics and visual arts. This award has truly motivated and encouraged me to push myself even further in both areas.”
Janice has enjoyed LIHSA’s specialized curriculum. As a Visual Arts major, she has had the opportunity to explore visual art from printmaking to art history, which has helped her define her skills. “I truly enjoy my time as a Visual Arts major at LIHSA,” Janice says. “The program offers so many different classes, allowing me to experiment with various mediums and styles. It’s exciting to be constantly encouraged to push the boundaries of my creativity and develop as an artist.”
When asked about the highlights of LIHSA, her teacher was top of her list. “Mr. Cuvelier is my absolute favorite teacher of all time!” she exclaimed. “The classroom feels so lively and enjoyable when he is in the room. He never fails to make me laugh and brighten my day. His work is incredible, and I aspire to one day achieve the knowledge and skill in fine arts that he has.”
In addition to this award, Janice won the SkillsUSA Regional Pin Design Contest last year, further showcasing her ability to use feedback to develop artwork for professional settings. Janice is also a member of the National Art Honor Society at LISHA and her skillful sketches, intricate shading, and subtle textures hang outside of the art classroom all year round.
Janice hopes to attend an art college in New York City, such as Parsons School of Design or Pratt Institute. “In 10 years, I see myself working in an area in the art industry,” she says. “I hope to have an artistic job that I truly enjoy and love.”
“Attending LIHSA has definitely helped me to succeed,” she notes. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to spend half of the school day pursuing what I love. Through this school, I’ve been able to learn and develop many artistic skills such as fine arts, figure drawing, and graphic design. I’ve definitely seen improvements in my skills over the course of my time here.”
The LIHSA community can’t wait to see what Janice creates next and we are so proud to celebrate this award with her this year!
