Farber Awards 2024 Alexandra LaPlaca

On Friday, May 17th, Alexandra LaPlaca (Hicksville School District), was honored at the George Farber Awards. She was nominated and won the award for her passion and drive to progress towards personal and professional goals, outstanding achievements in her course of study, exemplary characteristics including honesty, diligence, compassion, and high moral standards, and a strong commitment to the LIHSA school community.

Alexandra is an Honors and AP student at Hicksville High School and carries a 97 average at Long Island High School for the Arts where she is earning her Career and Technical Education endorsement in Performing Arts Dance.   Alexandra demonstrates strong technical skills in dance and learns choreography very quickly.  She frequently serves as a rehearsal assistant to LIHSA Performing Arts Faculty and guest artists.

 

Thanks to her professionalism and hard work, last summer Alexandra attended The Norwalk Conservatory of the Arts summer program on a dance scholarship. She performed in Broadway Supports LIHSA alongside former and current Broadway stars, and is a member of the cast of Big Shot, an original dance piece celebrating LIHSA’s 50th anniversary in partnership with the Billy Joel Foundation.

 

In addition to being passionate about dance, Alexandra is thoughtful about using art to involve her community.  She is fluent in American Sign Language and is studying Early Childhood/ Childhood Education at PACE University in New York City this fall.  Alexandra is the current President of the LIHSA chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts. She has represented the dance department as a student ambassador at LIHSA events, made time to meet with prospective students, and organized and taught free workshops. Alexandra is truly a leader among her peers.

 

Her love and dedication to LIHSA is evident in her involvement in school activities, active participation in class, and in her warm and welcoming spirit.  Alexandra, it has truly been a joy to see you grow in confidence this year. LIHSA Assistant Principal, Lindsay Rogan, Dance Teacher, Natalie L’Etoile, Superintendent of Hicksville School District, Dr. Ted Fulton, joined the Nassau BOCES Board of Education to celebrate Alexandra while she received her George Farber Outstanding Student Award.
